Review: 'King No-One'
'Halo'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
I’ve always had York-based busking band King No-One pegged as some kind of league two Glass Caves wannabes, knocking out fairly generic indie rock on street corners and touting their CDs to tourists and shoppers who usually don’t go to see real bands play. And really, what do they look like?

But I’ve also written extensively on the changing face of the music industry, and am as aware as anyone that the conventional model is screwed and the whole deal of recording albums and flogging them at the merch stall on the attendant tour can be thankless and a financial dead end (or worse), even for decent bands with strong fanbases. How do you get your music to a new audience? Radio airplay is so hard to come by and even then, convincing people to get of their arses and go out and buy a CD, or even stay on their arse and download something is a huge leap. So, on balance, maybe busking is the future. After all, live music has an immediacy, and if the product is there, right away, and at an appealing price, people are more likely to take a punt on what they’ve heard. Or, even if passers-by don’t want a CD, chucking a few pence into the guitar case can add up and even a fiver for an afternoons playing is more than an unpaid support slot playing to the bar staff and the sound guy. Still, like Glass Caves, King No-One have built a sufficient fanbase to warrant their being booked for some real gigs. In venues. Where people pay.

And, truth be told, it’s fair play. ‘Halo’ is actually a pretty decent indie tune. It’s reminiscent of so many precursors and contemporaries that drawing comparisons seems pointless, but the falsetto vocal backed by a big, wall-of-sound guitar. The production and presentation is slick and well-executed, and what the track may lack in substance or innovation, it more than compensates in energy.
