Review: 'ROGER ROGER'
'Fairweather'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '7th October 2016'

Our Rating:
The repeated name is because this folk/roots duo are twins Lucas and Madeleine Roger from Winnipeg. In a musical statement of sibling unity the Rogers each play guitar (acoustic and electric) and harmonize on one another's songs.

Produced by Lloyd Peterson, this is their debut album and it has already won admirers in their home country, reaching the top spot in Canada’s National Folk/Roots/Blues chart.

Madeleine’s songs are sweet and jangly while his are a more robust and earthy. Theme-wise, they keep things very general, never seeming to invest much of their personal experience or preoccupations.

The tunes thus stand as efficient song writing exercises with arrangements including space for back musicians on piano, cello and organ.

Sentiments like "You gotta be kind and you gotta be free" on 13 Crows are hard to argue with but lines like these strike you as bland platitudes rather than heartfelt pleas.

In consequence, as with most Canadiana these days, this album is gentle, mellow, melodic and a little tedious.
