Review: 'Widows'
'Oh Deer God'

-  Album: 'Oh Deer God' -  Label: 'UMC Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '14th April 2017'

Our Rating:
Widows are a British stoner act, pitched s being of interest to fans of Electric Wizard, Kyuss, Down, Clutch, and Entombed. It’s been five years since their last album, 2012’s ‘Death Valley Duchess,’ and over that time they’ve developed their sound considerably, and ‘Oh Deer God’ is dense, dark and aggressive.

I suppose the deer makes a change from the ultra-cliché goat, ubiquitous in all strains of rock and metal (and all the more ubiquitous the darker the shade). I shouldn’t scoff, and just as song titles like ‘Ride to the Realm of Coitus’, ‘Caffeine and Hatred’, and ‘Heresy and Venom’ have a certain comedic element in their overbearingly straight-faced portentousness, it’s credit to Widows that they can pull this stuff off, and come out slugging hard with a relentless barrage of thunderous riffs that render any such criticisms entirely obsolete.

‘Oh Deer God’ is a strong album which packs some heavy-duty shit from end to end. It opens with the title track, which brings forth a dense grunt and grind, the gnarly vocals driving a hard-edged abrasion that sets the tone and tempo. It may be pitched as stoner rock, but Widows bring more pace and aggression than yer average, and instead of the chilled but gritty grooves headline stoner acts like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age deliver, Widows mine a more aggressive seam.

‘Oh Deer God’ is an album which hits hard with a real sense of attack. ‘Baron Greenback Blues’ brings the fiery roar of Motörhead and throws in a vintage 70s rock and psych / desert element to forge something immense. The low-slung blues-based rock groove of ‘Germanium Buzz’ closes the album in the kind of style one might expect, but it’s anything but easy.
