Review: 'ROSE, WHITNEY'
'South Texas Suite (EP)'

-  Label: 'Six Shooter Records'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '27th January 2017'

Our Rating:
Whitney Rose from Canada looks like every C & W maiden should with big hair, big eyes, big boots and cowgirl hat

She calls her musical style "vintage pop-infused neo-traditional country". I couldn't have put it better myself.

There are no prizes for guessing that Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline and Dolly Parton are high on her list of influences.

She recently moved to Austin,Texas, presumably to perfect her image and get the twang to her sound just right. If this was her plan, it seems to be working.

This self-produced EP is a six song love letter to the Lone Star State. It finds her going it alone after her previous collaboration with Raul Malo of the Mavericks for her previous album - Heartbreaker Of The Year. That said, it's not a totally solo record since she recruited some of the best local players for her backing band.

Rose is sassy when she needs to be, schmaltzy when she wants and her nostalgia doesn't blind her to the modern world.

She praises dance floor romance in Three Minute Love Affair, disses digital culture in Analog and asserts her right to wear mannish footwear in My Boots ("That don't mean I ain't a lady").

What more to say? When you're looking at Whitney Rose, you're looking at country.
