Review: 'SCHOOS, BENJAMIN'
'Profession Chanteur'

-  Label: 'Freaksville Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '31st March 2017'

Our Rating:
This Belgian-born 'chanteur' may look like a banker but he has, if the press blurb is to be trusted, worked as a wrestler, a stuntman, radio show host and ....erm..... an astronaut.

His profession as crooner is also well established and this compilation CD seeks to extend his audience base. The 13 songs on his own label are drawn three solo albums released between 2012 and 2016.

Two standout tracks - Je ne vois que vous and Une Dernière Danse - are duets with Laetitia Sadier while on J'ai essayé de t'aimer he sings with Avril March.

I don't speak French so these couples could be arguing about who is going to do the shopping for all I know but it certainly sounds like they have more ethereal or romantic matters on their minds.

Indeed, I'm guessing that affairs of the heart are the main topic of all these tunes.

On La Chinoise we hear the voice of a young woman teaching a student how to say 'I love you' in Chinese while the one track with an English title is unambiguously called I Love You.

Schoos follows the tradition of 'chansons françaises populaires' by performing piano ballads with elegant orchestral arrangements by Jean-Claude Vannier who has worked with Serge Gainsbourg, Johnny Hallyday, Jane Birkin, Françoise Hardy and others.

Even with my limited knowledge of the language, I can translate Un parfum de nostalgia, a title that pretty well sums up a charming set of tunes that are infused with a strong scent of nostalgia.
