The headline is that ‘the band have already attracted a huge online following – with 1.4 million views for their YouTube channel and a host of solo credits between them’. But – and I’ve probably used this line once for every three pints I’ve had over the course of my career reviewing music over the last decade – commercial success is no measure of artistic merit. Millions of people like Oasis, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran. It doesn’t mean they’re any good.
In their defence, Lydian Collective are less bad aural chewing gum blandness than the aforementioned, but instead produce really smugly hipsterish muso fusion, with elements of jazz, electronica, world music and film all in the mix. Bleurgh.
