Our Rating:
After a career spanning nine albums and nineteen years this singer from Ontario seems a little world weary. Sometimes I feel like I'm nowhere", she laments on Tossing & Turning.

Even when the lyrics are relatively affirmative there's still a predominantly sombre subtext to these ten songs about remembering and forgetting.

The recognition that all things eventually turn to dust inevitably puts her dreams and desires into a sobering context. "I learned to find what my own heart wants" she sings on the title track but the line is not delivered with any great sense of joy or liberation.

The album was produced by Michael Timmins who also plays guitar and, from his time with the Cowboy Junkies, knows a thing or two about intimate, low-key music.

A track entitled Mystery Stories, Short Stories & Car Songs neatly summarizes the broad content. This is one of three touring songs, the others being Side Of The Road and No Regrets.

A couple of songs are tributes to the passing of longtime friends: Random Breakdowns, False Starts & New Songs and Meet me In The City; the latter features Skydiggers' frontman Andy Maize on harmony vocals.

“I let the songs lead me into whatever direction they want to go”, says Jackson. Sometimes this takes her into dark territory, notably with Alice, a grim, gothic tale of jealousy and murder in an oppressive small town setting.

The downbeat mood is constant but the singer's spirit of resilience shines through to make her fire worth following.
