Review: 'VNDTA'
'Pale Glow (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '13th April 2018'

Our Rating:
VNDTA’s singer, Megan Targett describes it as ‘probably the most difficult week of her life’. She recounts that the band were broke and spent weeks living in her car; how she ended an abusive relationship and lost a family member. Many would have crumbled or quit. Instead, all of the pain and the complex emotions stirred by these events drove the recording of the 7 tracks on this EP.

It starts heavy and furious – the title track pivots around a cyclical, churning riff and stop/start bass that’s as sludgy as you like. The vocals switch between demonic guttural and raw but melodic. ‘Swine’ weaves a goth / industrial aspect into the thunderous metal attack before taking an almost folky turn.

There’s a lot of anger driving this, but this is anything but two-dimensional, being both musically and lyrically articulate and varied: the passages of introspection and the more expansive sections which border on prog. It’s all delivered with technical proficiency, but isn’t so slick as to undermine the passion or emotional power.

It’s often true that the most potent art comes from the darkest of places, and that seems to be very much the case here.
