Review: 'MALMØ'
'We Come From The Stars'

-  Label: 'Integrity Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '4th May 2018'

Our Rating:
The title of this eleven-track album proposes the nice idea that we could all be descended from a cosmic source rather than being created by a supreme being.

In more grounded, less empyrean terms, Malmø are from Aarhus on Denmark’s east coast. They are 5-piece band dominated by the the pure voice and solid song-writing talents of Maria Malmoe who says “I dream of touching people with my music, reaching their – and my own – inner core”.

The breathy intimacy of her vocals (sung in English) provide the tunes with an air of wide-eyed wonderment, free from cynicism or harshness of this cruel world. It would have beeen nice to hear at least one song in her native tongue.

The chosen formula plays to the romantic idealism of lyrics advocating freedom and spontaneity whilst often straying into cloying sentimentalism.

From tender piano ballads like Breaking to more widescreen productions like The Way, there's no lack of variety but the dubious assertion in the title track that "we still glow in the dark" gives the sense that Ms Malmoe's vision is somewhat blinded by the starlight.
