‘Home is where your heart is / but you ain’t got no heart / so where the hell are you going / when everything falls apart?’ asks Joel Bader hoarsely before the instruments – bass, drums and driving guitars kick in: and so ‘Falling Apart’ introduces us to Sail on Sailor’s new album. It sets the tone and the pace, for the most part: fiery, uptempo, passionate.
The ‘woah-oah’ backing vocals and choruses might be a bit post-millennium alt-rock by numbers, and there’s a bit of Green Day / NoFX cliché punk about their sound – and then there are the heart-ending anthems, the slower heartache / heartbreak songs that exploit expansive arena-friendly production and lighter-waving choruses. But then there are some low-slung, beefy riffs and samples thrown in that keep it interesting and distinguish it from the myriad other albums of its ilk.
