Review: 'SOUND OF POP ART, THE'
''The Beat,The Beautiful & The Loaded''

-  Label: 'England In June Productions'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '18 June 2018'

Our Rating:
Chris Free was Cambridge punks in The Users who recorded the classic "Sick Of You" 45 in 1977 and forty years later he is still recording as The Sound Of Pop Art. Old punks don't die they produce quality British sunshine pop instead.

The biog tells me it's better to listen to the album as a whole and in order (is there another way?) and hurrah it works! SOPA deal in pop of the sixties variety with flecks of acid jazz, northern soul and psych in the mix. A not unreasonable comparison would be Style Council and at times Chris sounds not unlike Weller.

The album is terrifically well sequenced (easy with songs this good but not that easy) and the first four songs are unlikely to be bettered on any album of a similar oeuvre this year. If "Summer Sunshine" doesn't put you in the mood for a good night out during the current heat wave, I really don't know what will.

"Daydreams", "Sometimes Jessamine", and "Miss Vanity Fair" are all three minute classics and the rest of the album follows suit. "Supernatural" starts what would be Side B with a bit of a bossa nova and "Salvation" is soulified! "In The Heat Of The Night" is a languid affair. It's too hot to do much at all right now so kick back and listen. "Saturday Morning" is probably my favourite track. Nostalgia fix right about now. This is cool music crafted by eminently cool dudes.
