Review: 'Invoker'
'Cursed to Feel (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Heavy Metal' -  Release Date: '12th October 2018'

Our Rating:
On reading that Swiss hardcore mob Invoker are pitched as being for fans of Knut, Most Precious Blood and Madball, I worry that I’m growing hopelessly out of touch at the ripe old age of 43. I haven’t heard of any of these bands, and moreover, I don’t even worry that I’m missing out. Yes, I realise, finally, that I no longer give a shit. Life’s too short to know all the bands. It does mean that my reviews are based on the music I’m presented with rather than my preconceptions based on comparisons, influences and references… right?

Half. ‘Black and Blue’ offers a delicate, almost Joy Division four chords by way of an opening bar… and then explodes into thunderous rage. We’re very much in contemporary hardcore/metal crossover territory here, but Invoker bring the rage in spades, and it’s their uncompromising sound that’s the key here. There’s no let-up: even in the melodic passages of shimmering, chorused guitars, the vocals are still gritty and raw rather than clean and accessible.

‘Cursed’ brings a barrelling chug and obliterative, nihilistic rage, and there’s nothing pretty or especially subtle about this – and that’s for the best, because it’s hard enough and fast enough and brutal enough to let the licks pass.

Closer ‘End Me’ introduces a new level of emotional depth, slowing things down and twisting in a thread of introspection with the nihilism and the relentless rage.
