Our Rating:
The blues can be bold or bland, raw or overcooked. Unfortunately, this Canadian artist’s work falls squarely into the latter category on both counts. Actually, calling it the blues at all is a misnomer. The sound is more akin to AOR-orientated pop with roots-rock pretensions.

Guitarist Joey Landreth was (and for all I know still is) one half of JUNO Award winners The Bros. Landreth. They like him in Canada.

His second solo outing follows on from his debut ‘Whiskey’ in 2017. Of it he says: “Hindsight is a collection of songs that explore ideas about learning from mistakes, letting go, forgiving and growing up. And heartbreak. It wouldn’t be a Landreth endeavour without some heartbreak”.

The album was co-written and produced with multi-instrumentalist Roman Clarke, and recorded at Lincoln Country Social Club Studio in Toronto, and Stereobus Recording in Winnipeg.

The single Letting You Go apparently takes inspiration from U2-era ‘The Joshua Tree’ and most of the rest sounds like watered-down Jackson Browne.

Father Son Holy Spirit suggests a spiritual drive behind the songs which is fine except for the fact that it means any earthier qualities are lost or sidelined. The pseudo-soul elements are so empty of emotional force that, as an engaging or stimulating listening experience, it leaves a lot to be desired.

In short, if you are looking for music that can be played at a polite dinner party without disturbing your guests, Hindsight would be a perfect choice.
