Loughborough-based quartet Next Year offer what on the face of things looks like a fairly derivative take on ‘alternative’, referencing Sum 41, Blink 182, Good Charlotte, The Story So Far and The Wonder Years.
This six-tracker has energetic bluster and enthusiasm – and sounds like the work of a band who started out playing Blink-182 and Sum 41 covers. Then again, ‘Back to You’ does a neat job of exploiting the classic quiet / loud dynamic and pulls in some of Dinosaur Jr’s slacker ennui to good effect, and there’s a fairy wild guitar break on the tempo-changing ‘Remember Me’, so it’s not all bad. In truth, none of it’s bad, so much as its nondescript, but there are moments that redeem it at least.
