Our Rating:
The eponymous debut… it’s a small thing I know, but it bothers me. Is it a statement of intent, something driven by the need to stamp the band’s mark and name on the world? Or is it indicative of a lack of ideas? Call me a harsh critic, but if that’s your limit, then no wonder the second album is going to be ‘difficult’.

‘Lazer Beam’ is infinitely better than its title, and crashes in all guns blazing. The vehicle for one Lucust French, it’s pitched as being ‘heavy, somewhat demented but never anything less than original’, and it certainly brings the riffs. Part grunge, part Zepellin, its big on guitars and big on swagger.

Opener ‘Sink or Swim’ crashes in with a Nirvana-esque riff that’s weighty and intense. ‘In the Moonlight’ is less heavy and less intense, but no less nods to Nirvana and the lighter grunge sound of the likes of the more contemporary DZ Deathrays, and there’s nothing wrong with accessible pop-orientated rock tunes, not least of all when they’ve got balls the size of watermelons.

If at times it does get s bit standard heavy rock, the pulsating grooves of ‘Take Me Home’ blend the classic style of Led Zep with the contemporary heft and groove of Royal Blood. ‘’Silver’ may or may not be a reference to Nirvana’s ‘Sliver’, but it’s a gutsy QOTSA influenced stoner riff assault.

The solos are big and bold, and make nods to J Mascis, which is a plus, and credit where it’s due, Lazer Beam stomps all over the standard classic tock template to deliver something with more guts and more energy, and ultimately, the album’s title counts for a lot less than the grit and energy it contains.
