Review: 'Bis'
'Music For Animations'

-  Label: 'Last Night From Glasgow'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '12.20.'-  Catalogue No: 'LNFG40'

Our Rating:
This is the allegedly highly classified, confidential recordings Bis made for Animations, as a way to escape from the forces of evil that were chasing them down. Apparently, samizdat badly transferred copies of this album were swapping hands in the Easterhouse and Gorbals underworld recorded onto X-rays for sizeable sums, so to save us all the difficulty of playing the x-rays they have released it through Last Night In Glasgow Records. Although I hear the actual animations are being prepared for release on Betamax if you know who to ask.

The album opens with Theme Song (What are We Gonna Do Now?) that's a short sharp intro that's bouncy punk and full of energy.

Life As We Know It has Manda Rin's good shouty vocals over a low-fi punky pop backing and some great outer space sounds as they try to escape the bunker.

Road To Nowhere is the sound of being rushed blindfolded in the back of a black Mariah to the outskirts of Easterhouse in the middle of the night or something similar with Manda Rin yelling that she's on the Road To Nowhere as this careens around several awkward corners.

Blow Your Mind does just that with intense blasts of Punky pop magic and what almost sounds like a stylophone solo running through it.

On A Mission is the sound of them trying to claim they don't sound like Shampoo or Kenickie or even the Younger Younger 28's as they go on a huge bender.

Time For Action is time to go and make your placards and hit the streets to make sure everyone knows you'll fight to free Bis from whatever it is they are protesting about, mainly the lack of Samizdat copies of this album to be found on the streets of Glasgow.

It Must Be An Alien is a sci-fi bouncy punk tune that's a lot like a Helen Love tune that you'll want to bounce off the walls too.

Keep Movin' is another slice of sci-fi pop punk madness, that may have been fueled by a sink full of bathtub speed, this will get you bouncing all over the place trying to avoid the zombie leader that's attacking them.

The B-side opens with The New Heroes as they hope to save the world from all the zeroes making there lives a misery over this super catchy tune that you'll be shouting along to once you've heard it a couple of times.

The Future is synth punk, day-glo and they hope it will be weird and they want to be there with you getting weirder by the day.

Got To Go is the moment they hit the door and try to escape all the madness of the planet we are on, as they seek sanctuary in 5th dimensional re-imagining of The Gorbals that's been built on Titan or something like that.

Bad Reputation isn't a Joan Jett cover but instead it's Manda Rin and Disco John telling us about someone they know with a super Bad Reputation like Science-Fiction Steven that needs to be celebrated in song.

Another Day and this tune would be a pop hit that would see half the nation singing along to it, rather than totally ignoring it. This is insidious and will worm its way deep into your brain well before the bass and synth ending.

This Is Not A Phase has lyrics that could have been written by Daria and Lisa Simpson's as they make us know that they will always be your favorite cheeky lo-fi underground punk band, I love when the synths start to sound like an accordion.

Stop The Revolution is probably the opposite of the advice I'd give right now, but it depends on what revolution you want to stop, in this they want to feed the world from outer space, Yeah space dust for dinner again, this is like the B-52's on whiskey and Irn Bru cocktails.

The album closes with We Don't Need It is one last blast of Pop punk cartoon madness to leave us ready to happily ignore the advice on the sleeve that THIS MATERIAL MUST BE DESTROYED AFTER VIEWING, don't do that as you'll want to play this a few more times.
