Review: 'Catenary Wires, The'
'Mirrorball'

-  Label: 'Shelflife Records/Skep Wax'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '23.4.21.'

Our Rating:
Mirrorball is the first single off of The Catenary Wires third album The Birling Gap that's out in June. The Catenary Wires are the current band of Rob Pursey and Amelia Fletcher who were originally in Tallulah Gosh as well as in Heavenly, Tender Trap and Marine Research. Although you may now know rob more for his film and television work as an Executive Producer. They are joined on the single by Fay Hallam, Ian Button and Andy Lewis.

The single opens with Mirrorball a wonderfully sumptuous song about going to an 80's disco of the kind Tallulah Gosh fans would have been wallflowers at, but now it's a great excuse for them to flirt with each other over the lush chamber pop backing that just makes you want to dance under that Mirrorball.

Wish You Were here is rather more fragile sounding and full of regret and maybe a little bit of wishful thinking that things would be how they should.

The single closes with a classic cover of Human League's (Keep Feeling) Fascination that makes great use of stereo effects for the placement of the vocals and this is a wonderful Chamber pop reworking with cool instrumentation, it takes a gloriously familiar pop nugget and adds to it and makes me want to hear it over and over as I already have been doing with this single.
