Review: 'McDAID, MATTHEW'
'Look Away Sun Child (EP)'

-  Label: 'Great Canyon Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '18th September 2020'

Our Rating:
This Northern Irish singer songwriter is apparently now making waves in Spanish folk circles. He has the earnest voice of one who means well and desires to be seen as a trusted friend.

The three tunes on this EP were produced by John Morgan Askew and the title track features backing vocals from Joana Serret. Cory Gray plays trumpet, horns and piano on 5 4 3 2 1 but in essence these songs would function just fine as straight ahead acoustic songs.

The acoustic version of the Bee Gees' bitter sweet classic, I Started A Joke , gives McDaid the chance to show off his mellow side.

He described his 2017 album ('Off The Beaten Track') as "a rocky road filled with ups and downs" and there's a similar restless spirit lurking behind these newer songs. They seem to express a desire to be moving on combined with a fear of what might be left behind.
