Review: 'AYCOCK, JESSE'
'Jesse Aycock'

-  Label: 'Horton Records'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '16th April 2021'

Our Rating:
Tulsa multi-instrumentalist Jesse Aycock was hired as guitarist for rock sextet ‘Hard Working Americans’ and has also performed with a range of artists including traditional country singer Elizabeth Cook and The Secret Sisters. For his third solo album, he reveals himself as a sensitive singer-songwriter with a taste for mellow musings about everyday life,

On the record, he plays guitar, steel guitar, keys, and Mellotron and is joined by Tulsa musicians drummer Paddy Ryan and bassist Aaron Boehler. Jason Weinheimer, the record’s co-producer and engineer, contributed background vocals as do Lauren Barth, Allison Moorer. The bulk of the album was recorded at Weinheimer’s Fellowship Hall Sound in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Songs like High Hopes and Past Life show that Aycock is not averse to dabbling in southern rock but tunes like I'm A Wreck and Sadder Than A Sunset focus more on the fragile side of his character.

His sweet, soulful voice could be mistaken for a woman’s and the slow, reflective tunes are the antithesis of macho. He says: “Overall, I think this album is a little more personal and vulnerable than my previous albums. That’s partly why I decided to release it as self-titled.”

It borders on on the wimpish in places and for all the delicate charm of maudlin songs such as Second Chances Better Luck and Snow Angels. some extra spark of energy wouldn’t go amiss. But the record undoubtedly has its moments and the upbeat psychedelic freshness of Under The Gun comes as a welcome relief.
