Review: 'GALLAGHER, RONAN'
'Time Waits For No One'

-  Label: 'Modal Citizen Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '16th May 2021'

Our Rating:
Irish songwriter Ronan Gallagher only learnt to play guitar in his mid-fifties and is clearly on a mission to make up for lost time. A chance meeting with producer Marc Geagan has already resulted in two albums, ‘Time Waits For No One’ is the follow up to his debut 'Always Broke Never Broken' which was released in 2019.

Gallagher is not much inclined to sweat the small stuff or get over analytical about what he’s doing. He describes himself as ”genre fluid” and says "I write them as they come and have no part in how the songs come out." The influence of Johnny Cash is evident.

Even though many of the sentiments are negative, the songs rattle along with an incongruous joie de vivre. The jaunty fiddle playing of Damien McGeehan captures the devil may care mood. Gallagher emotes like a barroom balladeer after a few pints. Even somber observations that The World Is An Empty Place and that The World Is Burning, are not reasons to get downbeat or maudlin.

The single, Liberty, is an attack on the profit obsessed decision makers who are wrecking the planet and people’s lives but these protestations don’t ruin the party spirit.

A lyric from the title track sums up Gallagher’s philosophy: "Life is out there waiting, live it while you can."
