Our Rating:
Having spent a decade away, Cathal Coughlan is having something of a purple patch. The former Microdisney / Fatima Mansions front man released solo album ‘Song of Co-Aklan’ only in March, and now we’re on the cusp of the arrival of ‘a hAon’ (‘one’), the debut album from Telefís, his collaborative project with another seminal Irish artis, namely Jacknife Lee.

It’s quite a departure, and this EP containing four mixes, remixes, and versions of ‘Mister Imperator’ is an interesting follow-up to the ‘We Need’ EP: it follows the same format, and showcases more of their groove-oriented dancey pop that belies some pretty dark lyrical subject matter. Here, Coughlan – if I’m not mistaken – draws together the theme of poisoning by linking Roman history to more recent events. ‘You have no skin’ is certainly an unusual and memorable refrain, and one that’s visually disturbing, too.

The song has a certain vintage indie electro vibe, and it’s kinda laid back and mellow, sparse but with some nice attention to detail, and the contrast of Coughlan’s croon against the smooth backing is an effective one.

Of the four versions, the full eight-and-a-half minute Maurice and Charles remix is the real standout, a vast sonic expanse you can really get lost in, but make no mistake, this is a solid tune that augers well for the album.
