Review: 'DR. JOY'
'Dr. Joy'

-  Label: 'Idee Fixe Records'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '17th September 2021'

Our Rating:
With stated influences ranging from Cubism, Dadaism, Baltic disco, Italian soundtracks, and ..erm.. babbling brooks, you don’t expect anything conventional from this debut release. The Acid drenched day-glo colours of the surreal cover art further prepares you for the head trip contained within.

Dr. Joy are a collective of cosmic Canadians who evolved out of the Toronto psych scene. The core of the group comprises songwriter Matthew ‘Doc’ Dunn, songwriter/visual artist Blob, Harrison Forman, Steven McPhail, and producer Asher Gould-Murtagh.

In a blend of eight instrumental and vocal led pieces, there are vaguely identifiable songs like No Deal but with lyrics like “blinded wide awake light in sorrow left to woo the moonlight” there’s no point searching for logic or stories.

Pale Satin is a prog-style instrumental jam which Dunn on electric guitar channels his inner Carlos Santana. However, the best entry points for this record are through the Kosmishe drift of Signed, The Body Electric and the psychedelic funk of Midtown.

Ambient loosely defines what the band do but there’s no real sense they are working within any prescribed boundaries. It is all a bit bonkers but the music has a nice chilled energy if you’re willing to follow its flow.
