Our Rating:
Brendan Holmes was born in Dublin, Ireland and currently resides in Los Angeles, California. He was an original member of The Young Dubliners and has a day job as a professional photographer. The startled looking sheep on the album cover is one of his shots.

This ten track debut solo album was co-produced by Bryan Dobbs and is described as ”deeply rooted, timeless rock ‘n’ roll, and stripped-down pop.”

Holmes has recruited a team of backing musicians which includes violinist Rachel Grace, keyboardist Tim Boland and fellow Dublin ex-pat Pat D’Arcy on uilleann pipes, bodhran, and whistles.

Holmes says: "Whatever comes out, I just go with it” although he concedes that loss and heartbreak are recurring themes culled from experiences during over thirty years of music making. The first single, “Sweet Talkin’ Angel, sets the scene for this set of Americana influenced tunes with a Celtic twist.

Will you still love me tomorrow? is the question implicitly posed on Ugly which features a duet between Holmes and former Donnas frontwoman Brett Anderson. The sole cover is a quirky reworking of ABBA’s in which mandolin and guitars adds some grit to the pure pop of the original.

The sing-a-longs of Pieces and “Somewhere – Ode To Shane are obvious nods to the enduring legacy of The Pogues and fit in well with this gentle, good-humoured collection of folk-rockers.
