Review: 'Telefís and Jah Wobble'
'Falun Gong Dancer EP'

-  Label: 'Dimple Discs'
-  Genre: 'Trip-Hop' -  Release Date: '21st January 2022'

Our Rating:
Released ahead of the debut Telefís album ‘a hAon’, out on March 4th, Telefís (that’s Jacknife Lee and Cathal Coughlan), ‘Falun Gong Dancer’ is the third track to be lifted, and, here, reworked with the bass talents of the legend that is Jah Wobble, it’s pretty spaced-out, dubby, with a dense, wandering bass and spartan groove. This provides the backdrop to some semi-abstract, almost cut-up lyrics which are more allusive, and which take the form of a stream of images which imbue them with a highly visual quality. You feel like you’re sliding into a subtle thriller, a tale of espionage with an unexpected twist of magical fantasy. The vocals rise in a swirl of infinite reverb, and it acquires an almost spiritual quality.

As a release, this EP is more reminiscent of the old maxi-12” than an EP proper, with the reworking of the album version being accompanied by a brace of remixes, featuring. The dub is phat and spacious, and, well, dubby, with bass, reverb and echo combining to create a massive sound, and one that’s thick and soupy, while the ‘Donkey’s Gudge Dub’ version doesn’t put a donk on it, but instead extends the workout further, and brings the addition of some stuttering runs and some squelchy snare sounds, partially submerged in the sonic swamp.

It's a groove, alright.
