Following the success of his 2024 debut album ‘Backwater Collage’, Penny Arcade is now releasing the first single from his new album ‘Double Exposure’, due out in April 2026. Watch the video here:
The song is built around a drum beat from an Elka Drummer One drum machine. I got hold of one of these some years ago as it was favoured by a number of German groups (Cluster, Harmonia) who i admire. You can adjust the volume of the individual drums to create interesting patterns. It's a slight departure from previous Penny Arcade songs being more minimal in nature with very basic instrumentation.
French Drummer Jem-emmanuel Fatna added percussion and Max Claps (Proper Ornaments) added guitar over the chorus sections. Most of the instrumental parts were recorded in a single take giving it a raw, spontaneous feel. The whole song is an exercise in 'less is more'. The lyrical message is simple, remember to look at what's going on behind you.
