Bloody hell, there’s nothing like coming on heavy-handed with the warnings and threats. I know that I’m not supposed to copy, upload or resell promo CDs and that they remain the property of the issuing label, and I’m cool with that. But Fletcher’s latest offering, ‘Don’t Breathe a Word’ comes with half a page of finger-wagging legalistic caveats.
‘The ownership of, and title in, this promo CD is and at all times remains vested in Dramatico. It is not a gift nor has it been loaned or rented. The recordings on it have not yet been released to the public. Dramatico expressly reserves the right to require the return of the CD at any time. Dramatico gives permission to the named recipient (oops, they forgot to name anyone on my copy... which of course, isn’t mine) in the course of his or her business to listen to this CD for thee purposes of its review only. No other use is permitted and all rights are reserved. In particular, neither this CD nor the recordings on it may be; sold, given away or otherwise transferred to another medium; uploaded to the internet, broadcast or otherwise communicated to the public; in each case without the express prior written consent of Dramatico.’

Never mind not breathing a word, I hardy dared play the thing in case I removed it from the sleeve in a fashion that contravened the label’s permissions, and instead considered returning it to them to take proper care of their precious material. But eventually I decided to give it a spin, and immediately wish I had exercised the caution I’d initially erred towards. Not because the delicately folky ‘Don’t Breathe a Word’ is bad: it’s just completely unremarkable.
