Our Rating:
After expressing mild disappointment over Zoo Zero’s ‘Green Apples’ EP last year, I’m pleased to report that with a sympathetic producer in the shape of Scott Knapper in the studio, they’ve fulfilled their early promise with a storming debut album. Richly textured, the eight tracks plough into progressive territory while retaining a sharp post-punk edge, and wrapping it all in a psychedelic haze. A spacious surf-rock guitar swamped in reverb crashes over a driving bass and urgent rhythm on opener ‘Fraktion’.

‘Moon Communique’ and ‘Dnalsi’ reveal the band’s poppier side, the former a sprightly indie rocker propelled by some crisp drumming. There are softer moments, but the bulk of the album is centres around surging guitars and swirling currents of electricity.

Balancing experimentalism and stylistic range with cohesion and atmospheric songwriting, ‘Zoo Zero’ is a strong album that shows a band capable of great things.
