All over the Internet, people are screaming ‘what the fuck is wrong with people?’ There’s always something in the news that provokes such outcry and bewilderment of the general populace on social media sites. And now I find myself joining the masses. Why? Because I’ve just listened to the new EP by Glass Caves. I happened to catch them busking in York a couple of times, and then again as a support act in a proper venue in the last year or so. And they were fucking awful. Painful. Technically competent, sure, but the smugness and arrogance of their performance permeated through the music.
But it’s all about the music, right? Ultimately, it has to be. You can forgive a hint of arrogance and a bit of attitude when a band is too bloody awesome to ignore (and millions even let it ride with the mediocre talent of Oasis, but at least they had some songs you could describe as catchy). Not so with Glass Caves.

They may have, as the press release says, ‘built a committed following throughout the North of England shifting thousands of their self-released EPs along with selling out notable venues across their home county,’ scored a ‘coveted Radio 1 Playlist slot’ and played a heap of festivals including Live at Leeds, Tramlines, Liverpool Sound City, Long Division and even the BBC Introducing Stage at Leeds and Reading Festivals, but that doesn’t actually mean they’re any good. This EP will doubtless help them ascend still further, but that’s ‘cause people have cloth ears. This is middling, predictable indie, and while the title track does have a certain energy, there’s precious little else to recommend this release, which is why I won’t.
