They’re evidently not a girl band. These Irish noisenicks are.. well, bloody noisy for starters and very much male. ‘Lawman’ sees Girl Band explode in a racketous guitar-driven assault that’s shouty, abrasive and damn cool (and not a Motorhead cover either). Coming on like Shellac covering Pavement, it lumbers and lurches.... and then it really kicks off. If it was on cassette, you’d probably be checking the machine for damage. As I was listening to a digital copy, I only had my speakers to worry about.
It’s backed with ‘Heckle the Frames’ and I suspect the Girl Band guys may well be speaking from experience: hearing this angular ruckus you could easily picture them turning up to a hometown gig by Gavin Hansard and co and yelling drunkenly at their gentle melodies. Cheeky young whippersnappers, no respect. But I know who I’d rather listen to.
