Review: 'Brookes, Sam'
'Kairos'

-  Album: 'Kairos'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '17th March 2014'

Our Rating:
If ever a singer songwriter’s work was worthy of tags like ‘ethereal’’transcendental’, ‘beautiful’, then Sam Bookes’ ‘Kairos’ is right up there, especially the album’s haunting first track. While the rest of the album doesn’t exactly follow the same trajectory, it’s still an accomplished and evocative work. Magnificently meditative, his sparse acoustic pickings provide musical accompaniment to a quavering voice that’s deeply imbued with emotion and carries soaring melodies that pull at the heartstrings and embed themselves in the listener’s very soul.

Brookes’ voice is easy on the ear, as are his understated acoustic compositions. Additional instrumentation – strings, soft percussion, a marching drum, even electric guitar – are used sparingly to add depth and texture to his melodic songs and compliment his heartfelt lyrics through which he channels a broad sweep of emotions.
