More heavy-duty riffs from the guitar-loving Leeds scene, this time courtesy of Humans as Ornaments. I’m not going to knock the name: as a species we seem to have evolved beyond our biological purpose and even the briefest trip outdoors will lead to encounters with people who are infinitely more decorative than functional.
‘Think Sharp Kid’ and slams in like Queens of the Stone Age’, ballsy riffage and slinky vocals, while (virtual) flipside ‘Back Around’ lays down a chunky, choppy groove. The full-on guitars are countered by a strong chorus that’s bursting with melody and harmony – not that it’s by any means pop or weak. Far from it, and this tidy taster suggests Humans as Ornaments have plenty to offer and all the makings of a seriously good band.
