This EP from Zulu Pearls that picks up where their album, ‘No Heroes No Honeymoons’ left off, gathers recording session B-sides they believed were too good to be discarded. I’m not so sure they were right.
Combining 50s rock ‘n’ roll with 80s rock, ‘Safe Things’ kicks it all off in a jaunty, dreamy style. ‘Lightweight’ sadly lives up to its name and while ‘Boss of Me’ kicks things up a bit, ‘Not Like the Others’ is a rather limp indie shuffle, and the potentials of the last track, ‘Get Free’ soon dissipate in a wash of self-satisfied stasis.
They might call it their ‘unique brand of cosmopolitan pop, rock and soul’: I call it bland. The remixes are surprisingly good, especially in context, but maybe because that’s because they don’t sound too much like the originals.
