A long, slow, deliberate buildup with grinding powerchords suddenly breaks out at full-throttle. Double-pedalled bass drives the frenzied thrash assault. The guitar solos are imaginatively composed and well-executed and add depth and dynamics without detracting from the surging power of the rest of the instrumentation.
They occasionally slip into Metallica-esque thrashings, as on ‘Skinned Alive’, and during these moments sound a little ordinary and tame in comparison to the total powerhouse noise that constitutes the bulk of the album. Still, such moments are few and far between, and what’s more, when these guys go all out on the heavy assault, they really do slam it hard. ‘Man Made of Sand’ is truly merciless in its brutality. Elsewhere, the strutting boogie of ‘Strings of Rebellion’ provides a change of pace and feel, although the guitars still grate and burn.
