Our Rating:
I’ve never really been especially keen on the NME, largely because many of the bands they hype are tripe. Still, every once in a while, they’ll be onto something, and tipping Shirley Said is one such example.
‘Salvation’ eases in with a cascading glissando of stars dropping over a mellow, nagging bassline and is one of those songs that can justifiably be described (to use a perennial music hack cliché) as ‘dreamy’. With backed-off beats and a soft-focus vibe, it lulls the listener with Giulia Scarantino’s delicate, lilting vocals wafting through as though on a summer breeze.
It’s coupled with ‘Merry-Go-Round,’ which compliments and contrasts with a more guitar-driven sound. The chords wash broad strokes to add shimmering dashes of colour to the restrained rhythms and another tantalisingly melodious vocal.
