The cover art looks like a moonscape, but of course could just as easily be some barren location on earth. Inaccessible mountainous regions, devoid of visible signs of habitation could well be a scene of the oxymoronic ‘distant present’, an apparent allusion to the disconnection between perception and reality, individuals and their surroundings and one another in the contemporary age. Or maybe not. Either way, OZY conjure soft, amorphous sonic clouds, through which pulse heavy electronic beats, insistent and fuzzed at the edges.
At times delicate, throbbing and soft, the sonic representation of a jellyfish moving through the ocean depths, at others stuttering, scraping and altogether less smooth, there are textures and shades here that distinguish ‘Distant Present’ from other beat-driven ambient works.
