Review: 'PLACEBO'
'London, Brixton Academy, 11th February 2004'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
I know it's not very professional not seeing the support band, but I blame both the Central and Victoria lines for this. And not having a car. For the record, Imbecile and Colour of Fire who were the support acts. It was all too obvious at the lack of people inside the venue at the late hour of my arrival, that not many other people were concerned with missing the support slots.

PLACEBO made their entrance to "Bulletproof Cupid" blasting through the mountains of speakers either side of the stage. Brian and co were barely visible through an opaque curtain that obscured the stage from ceiling to floor, and side to side. At the end of the track, the curtain was dropped and the singing began.

"English Summer Rain" was next on the bill, though my memories of the setlist order go a bit hazy here as instead of standing around the as the sides or the back with the rest of the thirty somethings, I got my receding hairline upfront with the kids. That is where the true believers go to experience a gig!

They rolled through their vast catalog of hits from all four albums, including future classics such as "The Bitter End", "Special Needs" and "Protect Me From What I Want", to recent classics such as "Special K" and "Taste in Men", with real classics thrown in, including "Pure Morning" and "Every You and Every Me."

It was a great show, though having seen them on numerous occasions, it wasn't one of their best. The set was like one of those "greatest hits" compilations. You know the ones that big fans of the bands despise because they've been listening to them for years and buy all the singles, and there's nothing in it for them. Placebo are one of the best b-sides bands around, both with their own compositions as well as their excellent choice of covers. Oh, and a song that they left out was "Nancy Boy".

A good one, maybe next time it will be great and not leave a bitter end as this one did.
