Review: 'DRINKS'
'Hermits On Holiday'

-  Label: 'Heavenly Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '21st August 2015'

Our Rating:
There is something of the 'What we did on our holidays' about this album. Or, perhaps more accurately, what we did during a hiatus from our solo projects.

Drinks is the debut release of an ad-hoc duo: Cate Le Bon (no relation to Simon) and Tim Presley (ditto, Elvis).

This is what happens when opposites attract.

She is a folk singer from West Wales, he is a psych-rocker from San Francisco who, with his band, also goes under the alias of White Fence.

Together they improvised (i.e. cobbled together) nine songs in the studio with no pre-written songs being allowed.

Predictably, the results are mixed and not a little self indulgent. Tim, Do I Like That Dog?, with lyrics consisting primarily of the song title, is little more than a private joke set to fuzzy music.

Presley's earthy, at times flat, voice is heard the most which is a pity because those sung more dulcetly by Le Bon, notably the Deerhoof-like title track (and single), are what work best.

The raw DIY Lo-Fi work ethic means that it comes no surprise to learn that Presley has played on The Fall's Reformation Post TLC.

Mark E. Smith would probably approve of the sound since this is kept rough and ready by recording everything on analogue tape. Cannon Mouth even sounds like the tape got a bit mangled!

This is a record which will be consumed digitally but really wants to be discovered as a well-worn vinyl album in a charity shop.
