Nothing seems entirely improbable any more. Take, for example, emerging act Beyond the Break, a new rock band from Llanelli, South Wales. They number among their players former members of Catatonia, 21 Against, and Eleven, and the story goes that they scored a record deal just the strength of their demo. Or, if I were to be cynical, based on who they are. On the other hand, perhaps not: let’s face it, it’s hardly a ‘supergroup’ lineup that screams ‘next big thing’, especially as their sound references the likes of Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters (who they’ve supported at Wembley, which I guess is pretty impressive however you look at it). They’re hardly a poster band, either. And why should they be? It’s all about the music, right?

Recorded as a live performance direct to tape over the space of two weekends in order to capture the band's full essence into the recordings, there are some chunky guitars that drive across a sturdy rhythm section. There’s angst and anger, but also melody, in the vocals. ‘Mother Love’ may be missing a bone and calls to mind Biffy Clyro, but the guitars pack a satisfying punch, and fiery lead track ‘The Way It Was’ bristles with the kind of hooks that could definitely score these guys a substantial fanbase.
