Review: 'BALTHAZAR'
'Thin Walls'

-  Label: 'Play It Again Sam'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '25th September 2015'

Our Rating:
This Belgian quintet are headed by two songwriters Maarten Devoldere and Jinte Deprez.

Their third album was written on the road and the title reflects the absence of privacy between shows. The lethargic delivery suggests lack of sleep could be another issue.

The band play soulfully orchestrated Indie chamber rock and there is a (delete according to personal taste) uniformity / consistency/ predictability about their sound.

Devoldere admits that his lyrical range is limited; "I'll always write about girls", he says. Dirty Love, for instance, is about falling in love on tour while True Love explores "the superficiality of lust".

The first three tracks are the best with the slow burning decadence of Decency, the Dylan-esque snear on Then What and the "fuzzy glam stomp" of Nightclub.

The remaining seven tracks are subtle variations of these themes and I found myself longing for them to shake off self-consciously cool aloofness and rock out a bit more.

As it is, this is an album that is controlled to the point of being a little uptight.
