I can’t be by any means alone in being completely ignorant of the two bands represented here, but that’s cool: there’s nothing like a split release to provide an introduction. And what this eight-tracker offers is a squalling barrage of the blackest metal you’re likely to hear.
Verräter offer up three tracks, each a tempestuous, relentless black metal assault, a morass of churning guitars and snarling, demonic vocals, all delivered at a hundred miles an hour. ‘Vagrant’ sounds like a gang of wolves tearing the hard off a tramp and mauling its corpse, while ‘Deny Peace’ sustains the frenzied pace and furious aggression for almost eight minutes.
Sxuperion deliver five tracks, in the form of ‘Vibration’ I-V. The tracks are more succinct, with all but one clocking in at four minutes or less: their sound is even nastier and gnarlier, the vocals all but lost in a cavern of reverb. The guitars are messy and the drums sound like they’re being pounded psychopathically. It’s not pretty, but it is furious and utterly relentless.

Things are certainly getting dark on the far side of the Atlantic right now, and if the black metal scene is your bag, then Verräter and Sxuperion are well worth checking out as exemplars of that dingy, lo-fi satanic sound.
