Our Rating:
Welcome to 2016. It's becoming very swiftly apparent that it’s going to sound a lot like 2015, and, truth be told, much of the last decade. While people, at least of a certain age complain that they don’t make music like they used to, the chances are they’re not fans of radio-friendly ‘rock’. As far as I’m concerned, the problem is that they make music exactly the same as they used to, and have for some time. Such stasis simply isn’t healthy. Can it really be the case that the youth of today are exactly the same as the youth of yesterday? Have they nothing new to rage against, no new means of rebelling? Isn’t conformity itself cause for rebellion?

That bands are endlessly citing the likes of Modern Baseball, Pvris, The 1975 and Fall Out Boy is depressing and shows a real lack of imagination.

Even the fashions have remained more or less unchanged. So here are As December Falls - a band with a stereotypically vague, but equally self-important and sad name - promoting the lead track from their new EP (recorded by Arthur Walwin, known for his work with Charlie Simpson of Fightstar / Busted.) by playing their guitars and wearing plaid shirts in a maze. It’s all very
Instagram filtered looking, and there are single-word slogans knocking about (yawn: they’ve clearly not seen Bob Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ or heard about Prince performing with ‘Slave’ written on his face. Etc.).

This EP isn’t about protest, and the fact is, it’s hard to really tell what it’s about beyond standard teenage angst whining with a poppy edge. So what’s the appeal? Surely it can’t be that they have a half-tidy female singer who wears hot-pants? I’ve heard this all before – and so has everyone else. C’mon, don’t make the next 15 years an endless rehash of the last.
