When a band claims to amalgamate defining elements of Nirvana, Biffy Clyro and Muse, there’s reason to shy away. I don’t doubt there’s a market for overblown grunge-lite moderate rock, but that doesn’t mean it’s any cop. Oddly, though Rhyn are definitely given to indulgence and pomp, they manage to get away with it by virtue of some superlative songwriting and musical craftsmanship.
Yes, there’s an overtly technical aspect of the songs, but they never lose sight of the power of a thumping riff. Loud / quiet dynamic s and instrumental breakdowns are well executed and well placed. There are some strong pop hooks, too, with ‘The Only Place’ being a clear standout in its combination of an emotive chorus and expansive, cinematic sound. Elsewhere, Elegy and Victory both accentuate the rockier tendencies. It’s really rather good.
