Review: 'Lady Jane’s Revenge'
'1554 (EP)'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '26th February 2016'

Our Rating:
I’m guessing that the EP’s title links into the band’s name, and is a reference to Lady Jane Grey who was made Queen of England for 9 days in 1553 in an attempt to prevent the accession of Mary Tudor to the throne. You don’t have to have a vast knowledge of the history of the English monarchy to be aware that this proved to be a failed stab at changing the course of history. Imprisoned by Queen Mary and subsequently sentenced to death, Lady Jane was beheaded on 12 February 1554. Or perhaps it’s simply coincidence, stumbled upon after a few too many cabs of 1664.

So, what would Lady Jane’s revenge be? Returning to reclaim the thrown? For some kind of celebration of her martyrdom as a political victim and for Protestant humanists to seize power in England? Or maybe the infliction of some rather iffy rock music on an unsuspecting public some 462 years after her execution? Seemingly, it’s the latter.

Veering between shouty punk in the vein of the Beastie Boys in their early days – as performed by debut-album era Limp Bizkit – via hard-edged rawwwwk to grungy college rock and mawkish acoustic emo introspection shows the Cornish foursome have a certain degree of versatility. Or maybe they just lack focus and any real sense of identity.

The vocals on ‘Next Tuesday’ are woefully off in places, and not in a couldn’t-care-less slacker / punk way – it just sounds amateurish. Really, it’s all pretty painful and I can’t help but think that Montezuma’s revenge may have been more appropriate.
