'Mouse Gone Wild'

-  Album: 'Mouse Gone Wild' -  Label: 'Ras Records/Trojan'
-  Genre: 'Reggae' -  Release Date: '22nd March 2004'-  Catalogue No: 'E553317'

Our Rating:
Yes, it’s the sound you hear in a cartoon when you walk into the room and see a granny on the chair, broom in hand. Eek A Mouse (real name Ripton Hylton) is different, think Mike Skinner (The Streets) if he were born and raised in Trenchtown, Jamaica.

The standout ‘Jamaicanese’ (remixed by Tricky) is a lazy beat with Eek, or should I say Mr. A. Mouse rolling off a number of Jamaicanese wannabes. “Missy Elliott chat Jamaicanese, Eminem can’t chat Jamicanese”.

Touted by himself as a ‘sing-jay’, it is said he alternates between rapping and singing throughout songs. ‘Schizophrenic’ (the other track included as a bonus tricky remix) begins “I’m Doctor Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde, Remember Norman from Psycho?” and you could be forgiven for mistaking it for Space after a doobie or two too many. As you might imagine the actual Tricky remixes of these two particular tracks are far superior to their original arrangements.

Eek’s press release says his lyrics are ‘controversial and up to the minute’, and with tracks like ‘Pussy and the Mouse’ who can question it? “Take off your thong, let me give you my dong […] pussy’s in my mouth, meow! […] lick eat wide, my oh my!”

Yes, Eek A Mouse really matters. The final track asks “Who you gonna smoke with? Who you gonna toke with?” I think you know the answer … Eek, but if you’re sober stay the hell away!
