Great Ytene is an alternative name for The New Forest National Park, a picturesque area of Southern England where the four members of this band grew up.
Their sophomore album is, however, no gentle walk in the woods nor is it intended to celebrate the beauty of nature.
The group are now based in London and their music reflects the urban setting and makes you think of dark interiors rather than wide open spaces.
It's no coincidence that most of the band's publicity shots feature the four young men looking sullen in dimly lit rooms.
They formed 8 years ago as Colours with a more psychedelic sound; now they veer towards arty post-punk with a dense, jagged rhythms and vocals buried within the mix.

"I need to be free" is the desperate lament of the title track and although the words on the other tracks are rarely clear, a mood of alienation, frustration and general disquiet is evident in titles like Cruel Desires and Fixed Victim.
All in all, these are doom-laden songs with a claustrophobic character and certainly not tunes designed to be enjoyed in the great outdoors.
