Review: 'TAVILL, JAKE'
'Twisted Ideology'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Soul' -  Release Date: '23rd June 2017'

Our Rating:
Jake Tavill is a young NYC/NJ based musician who doesn't seem to have quite decided if he wants to be a soul singer or soul searcher. The seven tracks on his sophomore album contain raunchy funkadelic elements but, confusingly, these rub shoulders with introspective ballads.

Of the seven songs, three are flagged by the his publicists as 'top tracks'.
Erroneously in my view, this does not include the EP's prime cut, Why We Run, a non formulaic meditation on mortality which stands out for its boldness and honesty. This fine track is a plea for the angel of death to wait until he has made his mark on earth and carries the benign advice to "live your life, live your life kind".

It's a contrast to the libidinous opening track,You're Gonna Love Me or the raunchy Legs In A Twist.

Ending with Gold, a fable about a little boy's encounter with the devil, it all leaves this listener with the impression that Tavill is an artist who is still looking for a niche to call his own.

Given that his slightly effeminate voice has more in common with Maroon 5 than Motown, commercial pop with a twist might be his best course.
