They’ve already been compared to Swervedriver, Catherine Wheel, and Ride Bloodhounds on My Trail, and now Chilean purveyors of shoegaze, MAFF, follow up their 2015 debut album with a 5-track EP.
It may be layered, textured, and effects-laden, and the vocals may be mellow, melodic and bathed in reverb, but MAFF’s sound is sturdy, dense, and really quite rock ‘n’ roll – in the sense that The Jesus and Mary Chain and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are rock ‘n’ roll.
Lead single, the driving ‘Desfile’ is a clear standout, with fractured, fizzing guitars gnawing away in the verses and providing a textural counterpoint to the soaring, spacious lead line. Then again, the beefed-up beats make ‘Hawaii’ a punchy, percussion-led song, and it boasts a breezy hook by way of a vocal melody, while the slow drift of ‘Deserts are Rainbows’ shows the band’s dreamier, more wistful side.
