Our Rating:
When you see publicity shots showing this rugged, grey-haired singer songwriter from Ireland you expect to find a significant back catalogue of releases. You may look but you won't find anything! Despite spending many years making music and playing live, Mike O'Donovan has only now gotten around to recording a collection of his songs.

He jokes therefore that this album has been 65 years in the making and never has a record been so aptly titled.

Age clearly presents no handicaps for O'Donovan. Since his retirement he has completed a two year degree in counseling and psychotherapy followed by a masters. This record is simply the next thing up on his bucket list.

It was recorded in Limerick and produced by guitarist Dave Leary. O'Donovan's accent is very evident, his voice reminds me a little of Christy Moore although there is nothing remotely political about the songs. Rather, these are relaxed easy listening tunes about the importance of love, faith, the language of the heart and time as a teacher.

In tracks like Ghosts and See You Once Again, he looks back on the past poignantly but without any deep sense of regret. The songs reflect his experience without overdoing the nostalgia.

He rocks out on the closest song, Strangest Situation, like he's just warming up. He's left things late for a career in music but on this showing I wouldn't rule out a follow up!
