Review: 'KILLERS, THE'
'Nottingham, Rescue Rooms, 10th March 2004'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
It’s an expectant atmosphere which greets THE KILLERS at the Rescue Rooms. Hailing from Las Vegas, they seem to have already built a substantial following over here – in Nottingham at least!

Visually they resemble a bizarre cross-pollination between The Strokes and Duran Duran, with a touch of theatricality borrowed from the Vampire Lestat. Musically they again draw upon The Strokes, although perhaps a bit more upbeat and poppy due to their use of 1980’s style electronic keyboards.

Vocalist Brandon Flowers has an unusual style, with slightly gothic undertones. Although he's hardly in possession of a great vocal range his voice fits the music style perfectly. Each song tells an often surprisingly dark story, which Flowers delivers in his trademark style, playing to the crowd like a true showman. Drummer Ronnie Vannucci delivers most of his set standing up, whilst the two guitarists look on, suitably moody and rock-god-esque.

Visually The Killers really are something new and exciting and I would definitely recommend seeing them live, if only for the showmanship alone. From the opening bars of the "Love Story" theme to Brandon’s manic audience stare, I guarantee no dull moments. The high point was definitely their latest single, "Somebody Told Me" but a special mention also has to go to the ingeniously titled "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll." Pretentious and contrived they may be, but if it’s a night of pure fun and hard-hitiing retro chic you’re looking for then The Killers are your men and then some.
