Review: 'MOSS, LIELA'
'My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth'

-  Label: 'Bella Union'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '9th November 2018'

Our Rating:
On this debut solo album be prepared to encounter a very different Liela Moss to the lead singer who struts her stuff with London-based riff-orientated indie rock quintet The Duke Spirit.

“The act of making this record has felt truly exotic for me by way of its minimalism” Moss says as she reflects upon a shift into what she calls her "wordless-sparse-Haiku-what-the-fuck-silent-personal-revelation zone.”

It was created in her home studio in rural Somerset with co-writer, producer and partner Toby Butler. The sense of harmony and celebration in tracks like New Leaves and Moon are evidence of the therapeutic effect of her move out of the city and prompt her to get all new-agey when she comments “I felt that I was attempting to sing Mother Nature into existence.”

The songs are full of serene dream-pop arrangements with delicate synths and multi-tracked vocals. There's a nice sense of space and tranquility which is exemplified in Above You, Around You , a song about staying centred when surrounded by confusion.

The semi-devotional closing track Hidden Sea is further proof that the healing process is well advanced.
